So, there's only so much Chinese food an American can eat. It just starts feeling a little oily and heavy after a while, and Ellen's diet (no beef, no pork, minimal carbs, fried stuff and "weird shit") adds another wrinkle.
We just kinda stumbled across this teppanyaki place, Ambrosia. Benihana is the American chain version of a teppanyaki. Ambrosia is the classy badass Shanghaiese version. We managed to leave the camera in the car, so here are some cell phone snaps.

We sat around a gleaming stainless steel griddle and watched a Taiwanese chef whip up several small courses, while (of course) maintaing some friendly banter. I was most impressed by the use of dry spices on the plate -- check out the steak above. The gray powder is artfully arranged freshly ground black pepper, allowing for a DIY au poivre that was very nice.
The red shooter is a "red-headed slut," a classic college bar cocktail consisting of peach schnapps, jaegermeister and cranberry juice. Just kidding. It's beet juice.
